PARTNERS TWO TRYING AGAIN!!
November 15 will be the first session for Partners Two this year. (As you probably remember, we cancelled the one scheduled for September 13 because of perceived hurricane threats.) We're looking forward to this time together, and hope you are, too. It's been TOO long since we've seen you!
Discussion of the Introduction and chapters 1 - 4 in Paul Lakeland's CATHOLICISM AT THE CROSSROADS will be the focus of our time together. Good discussion material is in the questions at the end of each chapter. Copies of the book are available at the CRC bookstore, and K/P will have extra copies at the gathering.
Please bring your Vatican II Documents with you as some of the material in Lakeland's book is based directly on the documents. No doubt you've already discovered that.
And...you might know that the WORLD SCRIPTURE SYNOD is going on in Rome right now (Oct. 5 to the 26th). We've gotten some GREAT reads on it from the Catholic News Service. In particular, it's great to know that:
- Attending the assembly are 253 "synod fathers," 13 Eastern Catholic Churches, the Roman curia, the union of the superiors general of religious orders, 41 experts from 21 countries and 37 auditors from 26 countries (who include 25 women).
- Patriarch Bartholomew (Greek Orthodox leader - first time since 1054 that they've come to Rome to an assembly!) addressed the group in a WONDERFUL talk on Oct. 18.
- It's interesting that the gatherings are not in the Vatican, but at St. Paul's Outside the Walls - interesting because Paul was the one who was trying to get the early church to REACH OUT!!
More information on the back page and the website address too!
We look forward to our time together!!

PARTNERS IN MINISTRY 2008-2009
OFF TO A ROARING START!
August and September saw some 50 (35 in Fort Worth, 15+ in Bedford)
people begin what we all hope will be a good year of prayer, study and perhaps
“paradigm shifting.” Partners has
already been that sort of experience for some of these folks, as these “random
evaluations” indicate.
(These comments were under the heading: Anything else you want to
say?)
“The hours spent here today
have been very helpful, not only to further my knowledge, but to help me during
a very stressful time in my private life.”
“Today was GREAT, and each
time I leave with more and more interesting facts and more ideas to think
about.”
“I was inspired and in awe of
the universe ever expanding. I’m just a
‘speck in God’s eye’ – yet I still feel His love and direction. Great job putting this across!”
“I am sitting in a church in
Texas on Earth, whirling around the sun which is moving at an impossible speed
away from everything, and you want me to SAY something??? Stick with me, God.”
“I’m a convert and I find
this all very enlightening. Thank you.”
“I see and feel the ‘comfort
and respect’ at our gatherings.”
“I was surprised that Vatican
II encouraged laity to cooperate with other Christians and non-Christians. This inclusive approach toward all our
brothers and sisters validated my own feelings.”
SCRIPTURE
SYNOD TAKING PLACE
IN
ROME: OCTOBER 5 - 26
Beginning with a “Bible Marathon” led off by Pope Benedict XVI on October 5, Italian state television has broadcast the reading of the entire Bible by various persons who read from four to eight minutes until all 73 books of the Catholic Edition have been read. Beginning with Genesis, the Pope was followed by Russian Orthodox Bishop Hilarion of Austria. About 1200 people from 50 countries, including Catholics and other Christians as well as several Jews and Muslims were readers.
The Synod’s first week was dedicated largely to individual speeches by synod members and invited guests. In an extraordinary move, one of the first speakers was a Jewish scholar, Rabbi Shear-Yashuv Cohen, chief rabbi of Haifa, Israel, who spoke about the role of Scripture in Jewish life.
Patriarch Bartholomew, the first ecumenical patriarch to address a world synod of bishops said: “We must experience radical metanoia – a conversion of attitudes, habits and practices – for ways that we have misused or abused God’s Word, God’s gifts, and God’s Creation.” When the patriarch had finished his 25-minute speech, the Pope noted that the church fathers quoted by the patriarch are recognized as great theologians in both the East and the West. “If we have fathers in common,” the Pope said, “how can we not be brothers? This was a joyful experience of unity—perhaps not full, but true and deep.”
